چکیده

We investigated the processes that make seductive details (i.e., interesting but irrelevant pictures and text passages in learning materials) harmful for scientific concepts principles. In our experiment, students (N = 113) learned without (control condition) or with details, afterwards worked on a knowledge test. They then retrospectively verbalized their thoughts during while watching replay of eye-movements session (cued retrospective reporting). Our findings showed hampered transfer lower final school grades (d −0.60). The verbal reports from group, which were rated according to three detrimental cognitive processes, indicated several constructed mental models around diversion). This diversion led worse recall relevant contents. effects therefore seem be mainly caused by diversion.

Effects of Seductive Details on Multimedia Learning

Multimedia learning involved learning with multiple media (e.g., text, pictures, video). In an experiment examining the seductive details effect of multimedia learning, 78 participants recruited from a middle school in China were randomly assigned to study one of three learning materials (no seductive details, seductive details at the beginning, and seductive details at the end) about the econo...

Cognitive and affective effects of seductive details in multimedia learning

The present study integrates cognitive and affective aspects of media processing in order to make an argument for reexamining the current cold cognition perspective in multimedia research in favor of a more integrative perspective. The Cognitive-Affective-Theory-of-Learning-with-Media (CATLM) assumes that students need to become motivated to make full use of their cognitive resources. Therefore...

Uncovering the problem-solving process: cued retrospective reporting versus concurrent and retrospective reporting.

This study investigated the amounts of problem-solving process information ("action," "why," "how," and "metacognitive") elicited by means of concurrent, retrospective, and cued retrospective reporting. In a within-participants design, 26 participants completed electrical circuit troubleshooting tasks under different reporting conditions. The method of cued retrospective reporting used the orig...

Do Learner Characteristics Moderate the Seductive-Details-Effect? A Cognitive-Load-Study Using Eye-Tracking

The present study examines whether the seductive-details effect is moderated by spatial ability and prior knowledge, which are two of the most relevant learner characteristics in multimedia learning. It is assumed that the seductive-details effect with an increase in extraneous cognitive load and a decrease in perceptual processing and learning success is only present for learners with low spat...

Seductive details and attention distraction - An eye tracker experiment

The seductive detail principle asserts that people learn more deeply from a multimedia presentation when interesting but unimportant adjuncts are excluded. The recent eye tracker experiment attempts to expand this principle for learning contexts containing no time limits and examines the moderating effect of attention control. Students (N = 55) received an illustrated introduction to factor ana...
